Our Story

About Digital Barista

Digital Barista is a family run club and team sports photography business based at Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast, built over 15 years on Danette's relationships and Darren's systems, across more than 150 South East Queensland clubs.

Digital Barista is a family run club and team sports photography business based at Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast, run by Darren and Danette Smith. For the last 15 years we have put everything into one thing: club and team sports photography. In that time we have photographed more than 150 clubs and over 30,000 young athletes right across South East Queensland.

We were behind the camera long before that, shooting families, weddings, pets and a bit of commercial work. That grounding taught us the craft. Specialising in team photography is the choice we made deliberately, and it is where everything finally clicked.

How we got here

When our two kids were young, we made a decision as a family: Danette would be home to raise them. And from that home, around school runs and everything else that comes with little kids, she set about building Digital Barista one club at a time.

There was no shortcut to it. It was Danette, determined, picking up the phone and starting friendly conversations with club after club, season after season. Some said yes straight away. Plenty took years of patient follow-up. The more than 150 clubs we have worked with over the years got there because she kept turning up, kept building the relationship, and kept caring about getting it right for them. The growth of this business is hers. Darren takes the photos and runs the machinery behind them, but the reason there are clubs to photograph at all is Danette.

What we believe

That family decision says something about how we see this work. We organised our own life around raising our kids well, and we bring the same thing to every club we photograph: every kid deserves to be in the team photo, not just the ones whose parents remembered to order.

Somewhere along the way, photo day picked up a reputation as a headache. Lists that never turn up, names spelled wrong, kids left off the team photo because a family was away or forgot. We have spent 15 years proving it does not have to be that way. A photo on the clubroom wall with half the squad missing is not a team photo, it is a reminder of who got left out. So we build the day so nobody does.

Why our photo days run clean

Here is the honest truth about volume photography: it is not the place for artistic flair. A team photo does not need a clever angle, it needs every kid in it, named correctly, delivered on time. Doing that well, season after season, across hundreds of teams, is not an art problem. It is a systems problem. And systems are where Darren comes from.

Before going full time into photography, Darren was the business systems coordinator at APN Print, where he was project lead on building their in-house production management system from scratch, the software that kept 11 print sites across Australia and New Zealand turning out 60 to 80 newspapers a week. That is the brain behind how Digital Barista runs. A photo day with us is built like a production line should be: tight, planned, and engineered so the things that usually go wrong simply do not.

That is why the names are right, why the day stays on schedule, and why no kid gets left off the team photo. It is not luck or good intentions. It is a clean process, built on purpose, and refined over 15 years.

The two of us

Digital Barista is just Darren and Danette, and we each own our half of it. Darren is the photographer, and looks after post production, the technology and the accounting. Danette runs everything you will actually deal with, from your first phone call through to the photos landing back at your club, along with all our communication and marketing. So when you ring the number on this page, you are talking to the person who built this business on relationships, not a call centre.

Local, and not going anywhere

We are based here, not flying in for the day and driving home. Being on the Sunshine Coast means we know the venues, we know the clubs, and we can pick up the phone and sort things out without a long drive in the mix. Over the years that local base has grown to cover the Sunshine Coast, the Brisbane northside, the Gold Coast and the Gympie region.

Looking after your club and your families

When you hand a photographer your photo day, you are handing them access to a few hundred kids, your club's good name, and memories families will keep for years. We take that seriously.

Every photographer and admin staff member holds a current Queensland Blue Card, and we carry full public liability insurance. When families order online, they do so through a secure login, and we never sell or share an image without permission. Where a club can provide the details, we set up per-child access so each family only sees their own child, and we are always working to make that the standard.

We also track who is away on the day and give the club a report, so the kids who missed out can be picked up and no child is quietly left off the team photo.

How a day with us runs

Each child is photographed individually, and those images are built into a team photo carrying your club colours and logo. A well run setup moves through up to 60 players an hour, so even a large club is done in a single afternoon, with teams booked into time slots rather than left standing around.

We bring our own power, so a hall, a clubroom or a shed all work without anyone scrambling for an extension lead. Photo days run on weekday afternoons after school or on Saturday game days, when the teams are already there. Prints come back to the club within four to six weeks, packaged per player and sorted by team, so handing them out is simple.
